Skyros Town

General information

Skyros Town: Perched on the side of a mountain overlooking a beautiful harbor, Chora is truly spectacular with white Cycladic style cube houses stacked on top of each other.

The meandering roads lead to ther central square of the village. The whole town is crowned by the Castle, a Byzantine fortress with some Venetian trimmings built over the ancient acropolis. Following the signs from there, tourists will reach the main square, which lies on the way to the Castle. On the way you will pass the church of Agia Triada which hosts some fine frescoes as well as the white monastery of Agios Georgios founded in 962 AD.

Pano Piatsa or the Upper Square in the center of this serene, quaint town is the city center. The center has many inns and taverns offering beverages and delicacies, as well as bars and cafes. It is here, perched on a terrace overlooking the beach, you will find the bronze Statue of Immortal Poetry erected in 1931 to commemorate Rupert Brooke, the British poet who died on the island.

There is also the Church of Agios Athanasios built in the 17th century in the vicinity of the main Square. A further 10 minutes walk from the city center takes you to the Church of Agios Konstantinos and you can also climb up to the peak of hillock to enthrall yourself with the bewitching panoramic delights of the Mediterranean coastline.

Apart from the beautiful lush green scenery, the village is also famous for its traditional taverns, local ouzeries that allow tourists to quench their thirst any time they want to.

    Strong castle above town
Nice castle on a hill above the town. It gives great views of the island. It takes about 1-2 hours to see it, considering that you will also see the monastery of Saint George right beneath the castle. The entrance door is large and impressive and has a carved marble lion on it. It is amazing how many castles there are in Greece, isn't it? And most of them are so well-constructed that they have survived time very well. Inside the Castle of Skyros there are some ancient remains, which means that an ancient town used to be there.

    Walk to the Castle
The capital is really the best village to stay on Skyros. The rest are small villages in the middle of nowhere, good only for a visit and some are difficult to go. You will love the walks around the narrow paths of Skyros and lying on the beach. You can go to the beach on foot, not far at all. Take a coffe at hand and walk to the Castle. From there, you will get great pictures.
