Perched on top of a rock just opposite the Skopelos marina, the Church of the Virgin Mary is one of the most emblematic landmarks of Skopelos Town. Though reaching it requires climbing a flight of stairs, the experience is highly rewarding as you will have the chance to take in breathtaking views of the sparkling Aegean Sea and the entire town.
The church was built in 1660 and stands out for its impressive whitewashed walls, which follow the layout of the rocky hill. In terms of architecture, it is a four-columned cross-in-square structure, while on the inside, visitors can see several icons dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as an ornately carved wooden altarpiece. Moreover, beside it stands a quaint one-aisled chapel dedicated to All Saints.
From the Church of the Virgin Mary, which is commonly referred to as the Panagitsa Tower, you can then explore the narrow alleys of Skopelos Town and head for the Venetian Castle, which lies less than 300 meters away.
