Constructed on the site of ancient Peparethus, the Venetian Castle used to enclose the entire Skopelos Town. Commanding a strategic location on the highest and northernmost point of the town, it offered easy access to the mountain, whence its defenders could keep fighting off attackers in case of need.
Its history goes back to ancient times. When all the other settlements on the island were abandoned in the early Middle Ages, Peparethus was the only one that remained inhabited. Thus, the ancient fortifications were reinforced in the Byzantine era and were later incorporated into the enceinte erected by the Venetians towards the end of the 13th century. In its heyday, the Castle of Skopelos consisted of two enceintes with square towers that protected the main gate. Today, only parts of the walls have survived the wear of time, yet it is one of the most prominent landmarks of the Skopelitan capital, as it is still visible from every part of Skopelos Town.
To reach the Castle, you will have to climb up the steps that start near the Church of the Virgin Mary at the edge of the port. However, the ascent is highly rewarding, as you will have the chance to take in the truly breathtaking views of Skopelos and the Aegean Sea.
