Located in the heart of Skopelos Town, the Vakratsas Mansion is an 18th-century Skopelitan residence that has been converted into a noteworthy folklore museum.

Within its walls, it is possible to find a rich collection of priceless items brought to the island from numerous ports around the Mediterranean and the Black Sea where the family’s merchant ships used to trade. Vintage furniture, traditional women’s costumes, paintings, embroideries, rare books, pieces of porcelain and other household items piece together a picture of Skopelos that goes back at least 250 years into the past! Of particular interest is the room where doctor Stamatis Vakratsas received his patients, which has been preserved exactly as it used to be, offering a unique insight into the medical practices of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

At the same time, the mansion’s beautiful garden with its distinctive palm tree often provides an ideal venue for various cultural activities, such as lectures, book presentations and art exhibitions. Whether or not you’re lucky enough to chance upon one of these events, a visit to the Vakratsas Mansion is definitely worth your while if you wish to immerse yourself in the island’s past.
