Located in the heart of Skopelos Town, the Museum of the History of Skopelos is housed inside a traditional residence where the Skopelitan writer Pavlos Nirvanas spent his childhood years.
Built during the first half of the 19th century, this house stands out as one of the most representative examples of local folk architecture and has been declared a listed monument as it still retains its original features without any subsequent interventions. Following the architectural style prevalent in the region of Macedonia —which was also quite widespread in Skopelos— it is a two-storey edifice constructed, for the most part, with stone. Only the facade and the eastern side of the first floor have been fashioned with wattle and daub, forming what is known as a sachnisi, a kind of bay window based on wooden beams.
Today, Pavlos Nirvanas’ residence has been fully restored, housing an exhibition that narrates the history of Skopelos from antiquity to the present. Interestingly, the town’s history is not presented in a linear way, but rather in thematic units focusing, among others, on culture, social organization and economy. Visitors will have the chance to see posters and rich photographic material displayed around the walls of the house.
