Location: Kechria

Imagine an enthralling, pristine forest overgrown with centuries-old trees and aromatic herbs that scent the air with the enticing fragrance of thyme, oregano, sage, rockrose, and fennel. This is precisely what you’re in for at the Kechria Woods, which is now more commonly known as the Magic Forest of Skiathos — an apt name that is, beyond the shadow of a doubt, more than well-deserved.

The walk starts just below the 18th-century Kechria Monastery, passing among moss- or lichen-covered trees with gnarled roots and hollow tree trunks that often take on fantastical shapes. Tall ferns add to the fairy-tale ambiance, while the sun playfully peeks through the dense foliage, creating a magical symphony of light and shadow.

Of all the natural wonders of Skiathos, this is one of the least-known and most sublime; it is the perfect place to feast your eyes on all the soothing shades of green while listening to the murmur of the gurgling brooks traversing the forest. And though you might encounter a couple of nature enthusiasts like yourself, you will be able to have a highly intimate experience, which amplifies the sights and sounds of nature. Along the way, you will also come across the ruins of a few water and oil mills, which perfectly harmonize with the surrounding landscape.

The hike will take about 5 hours at a leisurely pace, so it is best to set off in the early morning when the summer heat is not yet too intense. Of course, you will also need to be equipped with a comfortable pair of trainers or walking shoes, as well as plenty of water and sun cream. And don’t forget to bring along your swimwear, as, at the edge of the forest, you will be greeted by the heavenly Kechria Beach. There, you will also find a small tavern serving delicious recipes that will allow you to fuel up after the hike.
