Alonissos Chora

General information

Chora, also known as Alonissos Old Town, is a lovely village that once served as the island's capital. The destructive 1965 earthquake, though, made the settlement suffer major damages. At that time all the inhabitants deserted the village and moved near the coast where they built Patitiri, the new capital of Alonissos. In the following years, many buildings were restored and new shops were established, revitalizing Chora and attracting many new visitors.

Chora lies 3.5 kilometers west of the port and capital, built amphitheatrically on the slopes around a natural bay. The old part of Alonissos is an idyllic and calm place with whitewashed houses, narrow paved streets, and stairs leading to the top of the hill. Many houses feature flowered balconies and colorful shutters, adding a particularly joyous touch to the village. Lovely traditional cafes and charming restaurants can also be found here, offering excellent Greek delicacies and impeccable views. Those wanting to make their stay at Chora will find plenty of boutique hotels and comfortable rooms, many of which have been built according to traditional architecture.

More about Chora

Standing 200 meters above sea level, the village was once utilized for its advantageous strategic positioning. This is evident in the old Byzantine walls that can still be seen in some parts of Chora, which were restored by the Venetians to better fortify the city. Many Byzantine churches survive to this day as well, including the church of the Birth of Christ and the church of Agios Georgios. It is also worth visiting the old windmill of Chora, built in 1850, which has been restored and now functions as an accommodation.

During the summer, Chora can be easily reached from Patitiri by local bus. You can also rent a private vehicle from the many car rental agencies found in the capital. Alternatively, you can follow a delightful trail starting from Patitiri, zigzagging through trees, and offering a wonderful view.
