Decision to replace plastic with fabric bags
Alonissos is the first Greek island that launches a special program to get rid of plastic bags in daily life. This effort starts today by the Municipality of Alonissos, the Network Mediterranean SOS and Mom, the Organization for the Study and Protection of the Mediterranean Monk Seal. The program is entitled Alonissos with no plastic bags and aims to protect the coastal and sea environment of Alonissos, an island where a large population of the Mediterranean monk seals Monachus Monachus go to reproduce and give birth.
Moreover, the island takes plans and strategies in order to arise as an alternative destination. During this program, 2,000 fabric and reusable cotton bags will be distributed to the residents, while there will also be educational activities for students, seminars and workshops with the participation of local authorities.
