Alonissos Marathon

The first International Multi Terrain Marathon conducted in Alonissos took place on the 27th of May 2005. It was organized with the support of the local municipality by the organization Hellas Sports from Larissa which aimed to create awareness about environmental issues through athletics. Starting at the port of Patitiri, the remarkable course ran through unique and diverse terrains like footpaths, beaches, and forests.

Over fifty athletes from Greece and the rest of Europe participated in this first running event. Many well-known marathon runners and hyper-marathon runners who had participated in the Olympic Games and other international competitions also ran in this marathon. Track and field champions and middle and long-distance athletes also joined as well. The 2005 international Multi Terrain Marathon that took place on the island of Alonissos was a novel and unique experience for all the participants.

Today, the renowned athletic event known as the Alonissos Challenge is held every June in Patitiri. It consists of 20-, 10-, and 2-kilometer running races. The races are unique for their multi-terrain elements, offering continuous alterations along the beautiful landscapes of Alonissos, offering a great opportunity to get a glimpse of the island's geography.
