The picturesque, whitewashed parish church of Agios Ioannis in the area of Kounoupitsa was erected in 1822, exclusively funded by Laskarina Bouboulina, the female naval commander who took an active part in the 1821 Greek War of Independence. In fact, it was built within the grounds of her summer estate, which is why it is commonly known as Boubouleiki. When the heroine died, she was buried near the chapel, where her bones remained till they were carried to Agios Nikolaos Church in 1952, before being eventually donated to the Spetses Museum upon its opening.
