Agistri Megalochori

General information

Megalochori, also known as Myli, is the capital of Agistri. It is located on the northwestern part of the island, just 1.8 km west of the village of Skala. Along with Skala, Megalochori is one of the busiest areas on the island, as it hosts many of its tourist facilities. Some lovely cafes, restaurants, and bars can be found here, serving tasty meals and drinks. Various accommodations are also hosted in the capital, from modern hotels to cozy apartments.

Despite its development, Megalochori has managed to keep its traditional character intact. A stroll around the settlement’s stone-paved alleys reveals its many picturesque white houses, with clay-tiled roofs and nice yards. Of major interest is the Church of Zoodochos Pigi, the island's cathedral. Constructed in the 19th century, this imposing structure stands out for its impressive dome and beautiful frescoes. The church celebrates every Easter Friday with a lively festival that attracts pilgrims from Agistri and the neighboring island of Aegina.
