Agistri Avantis III Shipwreck
The small island of Dorousa is located southwest of Agistri, near the islet of Aponissos. The seabed of Dorousa is a popular scuba diving destination among those visiting Agistri as it is where the Avantis III Shipwreck is found.
Avantis III was a general cargo ship made in 1977 in Norway. At a length of 80 meters and a width of 13 meters, the ship had a total capacity of 2,362 tons. On November 19th, 2004, it crashed on the coast of Dorousa while making the trip from Mesolongi to Cyprus. Today, the wreck lies at a depth of 17 to 48 meters on the southeastern side of the island.
Exploring the shipwreck is a one-of-a-kind experience. Scuba divers will be able to access the ship’s engine room and view its propeller and impressive crane. A large part of the cargo the vessel was carrying is also visible, as are its instruments, radio, and radar screen, all of which have been surprisingly well preserved. The vibrant marine life found on the seabed is also a real highlight.
It should be noted that visiting the shipwreck requires extra caution as parts of it are dilapidated and should not be approached by inexperienced divers.
