The traditional architecture of Agistri can be seen in Megalochori, the capital of the island, and around the port town of Skala. The streets of these settlements are lined with whitewashed houses with blue shutters, reminiscent of Cycladic architecture. Spacious yards and colorful gardens are also prominent and add to the charm of these areas. Full of narrow and curving alleys, these villages present a picturesque environment worth exploring.
The quaint settlement of Limenaria on the southern side of the island is characterized by its traditional stone houses. It also hosts some authentic Greek taverns that provide a homely atmosphere. The Church of Agia Kyriaki lies in the center of the village and is a popular meeting point for the locals.
Many of the churches found in Agistri follow the typical Byzantine style. The church of Zoodochos Pigi in Megalochori, a 19th-century basilica with a dome, is of great interest, while the imposing Church of Agioi Anargyroi in Skala stands out for its blue dome and white walls. Moreover, the church of the Virgin Mary in the small village of Metochi is worth a visit as well, as it provides spectacular views of the sea.
Visitors can enjoy their stay in many of the hotels that have respected the traditional architecture of the island.
