In 2020, this 9-meter-high stone lighthouse was declared a monument of modern Greek history as it forms part of the lighthouse network that facilitated navigation in the Argo-Saronic Gulf in the 19th century. It is a unique architectural sample of the stone lighthouses that not only guarantee safe seafaring but also enhance the island’s beauty and is an inherent part of the country’s nautical tradition.
The Lighthouse of Bouza was built in 1881, and, up to 1953, it needed a lighthouse keeper to operate. The last keeper’s father, who also lived there, had been nicknamed “Bouzas”, and, since he spent a lot of time inside it, the place came to bear his name.
Despite the wear of time, it stands there, lofty and stubborn, reminiscent of the days when it showed sailors the way. It is perfect for a romantic walk, especially if you choose to go at sunset or on a starry night.
