Close to Epidaurus impressive churches and monasteries are found which attract many visitors for their historical interest and architecture. One of the most known monasteries located in Kalami village, 22 km from the ancient town is the Monastery of the Dormition of the Virgin. It is set in an outstanding location right in the center of a lush green forest, quite inspiring and relaxing for every visitor. It was built in 17th century and traces of hermits who lived here exist to this day.
One of the monasteries that certainly deserve your attention is the Monastery of Panagia Agnountos built on the mountain slopes, some km from the main town. It was founded in 11th century and its glorious form is preserved to this day despite its numerous damages and remote location. The monastery is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is celebrated on August 15th with a great festival. A perfect example of Byzantine art is the church of Agios Ioannis the Theologian built on the rocks of a gorge. Nearby is Avgo monastery.

The lovely church of Agios Nikolaos is located on a hill and can be seen from any spot of the port.
The monastery of Panagia Agnountos was built in the 18th century in the Byzantine style. It is famous for its frescoes and its nice location, close to the mountainous village of Nea Epidaurus.
Built in the 15th century, the Monastery of Taxiarches contributed a lot in the Greek War of Independence. Today it is a female monastery and it is open to visitors.
