The Ζeitenlik French Military Cemetery Museum is located about 3.5 km from the city center. Established in 1916, Zeitenlik is an allied military cemetery and World War I memorial park, located on the sight of the main hospital of the Serbian army during the war. Here lie the graves of over 20.000 French, Serbian, British, Italian, Russian, and Greek soldiers and Bulgarian Prisoners of War. The French sector of the cemetery contains the graves of over 8.000 French soldiers.
Major renovations were carried out in the French section from 2011 to 2012, with funding from the Ministry of Defence of France. The old residence of the cemetery guard was restored to house the Museum of the French Military Cemetery in the context of the hundredth anniversary of the First World War. Today, the museum offers visitors insight into the events of the war, through exhibitions of historical artifacts, vintage photographs, maps, and documents. Of note is the striking monument outside of the museum that honors the fallen soldiers.
The Ζeitenlik French Military Cemetery Museum is open to visitors every day, from 09:00 to 17:00.
