Location: Kordelio Don't miss: Museums guide (free admission dates and other useful info)
The Thessaloniki Railway Museum is located in the municipality of Elefterio-Kordelio, about 8 km northwest of the city center. It housed the old railway station of the city, dated to 1894. The building also served as a military station during the Ottoman period. In 1986, the building was donated to the Friends of the Railway Society so that the museum could be created. It would officially open its doors in October 2000.
The museum presents interesting exhibits of old railway vehicles, such as steam locomotives and traction engines, as well as railway workers’ uniforms, tools, personal belongings, technical manuals, and details of old steam and diesel engines. The vintage furnishings that were once housed in the carriages of the Greek royal family are also of note. In addition, visitors will get to see a map that displays all the Greek railway lines, old photographs, and historical documents.
A collection of old OSE engines is displayed in front of the museum. The spacious courtyard boasts a restaurant carriage that has been delightfully constructed and decorated to resemble the renowned Orient Express. Cultural events and activities are often hosted in the courtyard, while the museum also organizes educational programs meant to spread the history of railways to the younger generations.
The Thessaloniki Railway Museum is open on weekdays from 10:00 to 13:30.
