Location: Oreokastro

Oreokastro Lake is an artificial body of water located about 12.5 km north of the Thessaloniki city center. It was constructed from 1999 to 2000 by the Municipality of Oreokastro in place of an old landfill. Its original purpose was to irrigate the region’s agricultural land and to protect it from floods.

Oreokastro Lake is characterized by its enchanting beauty and wonderful natural surroundings. Lush greenery, tall trees, and verdant hills dominate the region, creating a striking picture. Visitors can walk along the lake and the natural expanse, taking in the beautiful sights and the serene atmosphere. A couple of benches found throughout the area offer some nice resting spots under the tree shade. This is also a popular picnic spot among visitors and locals alike.

While small in size, the lake holds great significance for the region of Oreokastro. It has notably become the natural habitat for many species of waterfowl and fish and contributes to the preservation of the local ecosystem.
