Alaca Imaret is a small treasure of Ottoman architecture and heritage preserved in good condition. It is located close to the imposing Church of Agios Dimitrios in the heart of Thessaloniki.
The mosque was constructed in the 15th century and its name probably derives from the characteristic colorful minaret that adorned the building, as alaca is the Turkish word for “colorful”.
Based on the inscription at the entrance, its foundation took place in 1484. After Rotonda and the Bey Hammam, Alaca Imaret was considered one of the most important buildings in Thessaloniki.
The building has five domes, the two largest two of which define the central prayer area. The handout and the teaching ar were found in the three secondary ones, which communicate with each other. The entrance to the mosque is flanked by an arched arcade and covered by another five domes.
In its original form, the interior had rich decoration and relief painting. The dome, even though now partially preserved, still exudes a charm thanks to its stunning details. In addition, similar to Yeni Mosque and Casa Bianca, the building now serves as an exhibition space for the Municipal Gallery of Thessaloniki.
