Thessaloniki Rotonda

General information

The neighborhood of Rotonda is one of the most popular meeting spots in Thessaloniki. The area took its name from the monument of Rotonda, a massive circular structure built by the Romans in 306 AD. This imposing building dominates this part of town and is particularly known for its stunning mosaics. Close to Rotonda, there is the Arch of Galerius, also known as Kamara, one of the most popular sights in the city. Because of their unique historical significance, both these landmarks have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Rotonda lies within walking distance of many of Thessaloniki’s most characteristic archaeological sites, namely the Roman Market and the Palace of Galerius. In proximity to Rotonda, you will find some of the most famous Byzantine churches in the city. You can also visit Bezesteni, an open market with fabrics, clothes, shoes, and carpets reminiscent of an oriental market. A few restaurants can be found in and around Rotonda, while some lovely lounge bars are located nearby as well.
