General information

Kalamaria is one of the busiest and most densely populated suburbs of Thessaloniki. Located about 7.5 km south of the city center, it covers about 6.400 square kilometers and hosts over 92.000 permanent residents. Its enchanting seaside ambiance and modern developments have made it a popular destination among visitors to Thessaloniki.

The area was first inhabited during prehistoric times, evident from the ancient barracks unearthed during excavations conducted in Mikro Emvolo, the cape of Kalamaria. The name Kalamaria dates to 1083. During Byzantine and Ottoman times, the area was mostly uninhabited. In the early 1920s, over 10.000 refugees from Asia Minor and East Thrace came to Thessaloniki, most of whom settled in the Kalamaria. The region was part of the Municipality of Thessaloniki up until 1943 when it became an independent administrative unit.

Today, Kalamaria is characterized by its lively atmosphere. Exploring the pedestrian streets is a worthwhile endeavor that reveals many entertainment opportunities, from cafes and restaurants to bars and various shops. The main square presents paved tiling and accents of green and is where the Kalamaria Town Hall resides. The Olof Palme Park on the southern end of the area is the ideal destination for a tranquil walk or a picnic amidst lush trees.

Along the waterfront lies the Aretsou Marina. About 50 meters in length, it can accommodate up to 380 vessels and is bordered by lovely parks, cafes, and a few eateries that offer wonderful views of the sea. One should also not miss out on visiting Golden Bay Beach. This heavenly spot offers golden sand and crystal blue waters, perfect for a day of swimming and sunbathing. It is well-organized and boasts sunbeds, umbrellas, and a beach bar.

What is more, Kalamaria offers some interesting sightseeing opportunities. The Palataki, also known as Kiverneio, is a stunning neoclassical building dating to the 1950s that is situated in a wonderful seaside location. The Kalemkeris Photography Museum is worth the visit, showcasing the artistic works of Christos Kalemkeris and the cultural heritage of Thessaloniki. Finally, there is the Greek Pharmaceutical Museum which shines a light on the history of pharmacy in the country through a display of historical pharmaceutical equipment.

Kalamaria is frequently connected to the Thessaloniki city center by bus.
