Thessaloniki Egnatia

General information

The neighborhood of Egnatia is located in the center of Thessaloniki. It was named after Egnatia Avenue, which starts from Dimokratias Square and ends at the University of Macedonia, crossing the neighborhood along the way.

A walk down Egnatia reveals many interesting monuments and historical sights. Those passing by can see the ruins of the once-thriving Roman Market and the Bey Hamam, a well-preserved Ottoman bathhouse. Many nice Byzantine churches also live along the street, including the UNESCO-recognized Church of Agios Dimitrios and the Church of Agia Sofia. The street also crosses the Arch of Galerius, one of the most-visited monuments in the city.

Egnatia hosts many fascinating museums, ideal for those interested in delving deeper into the history of Thessaloniki. The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki and the Museum of Byzantine Culture are two must-visits, showcasing two distinct eras in the city’s lifetime. As the sun begins to set, Egnatia becomes a bustling nightlife spot, with a variety of bars and clubs staying open until early in the morning.
