Thessaloniki Waterfront

General information

The Waterfront is the most popular spot in Thessaloniki and one of the most beautiful public spaces in the country. Since its opening in 2013, it has become a staple of the city and a major attraction among visitors and locals alike. It stretches for about 5 kilometers, starting from the Thessaloniki Concert Hall and ending at the port.

A stroll along this narrow beachfront is a serene experience, punctuated by the wonderful seaside ambiance and the glistening blue of the Thermaic Gulf. A collection of 13 green spaces can be seen on the inner side of the beachfront, offering ample shade and beautiful colors of green. The Waterfront is a bustling nightlife spot, with plenty of cafeterias, bars, and restaurants found along its 5-km-long stretch. Facilities such as cycle paths, sports grounds, and children’s play areas can also be found here.

While walking down the beautiful promenade, you will pass by many of the city’s biggest points of interest. Perhaps the most remarkable is the White Tower, a 16th-century fortification that has become the trademark of Thessaloniki. The charming Aristotle Square is situated next to the beachfront, as are the Royal Theatre of Thessaloniki and the National Resistance Monument. The statue of Alexander the Great is one of the most striking landmarks found here, while also eye-catching are The Umbrellas, a spectacular art installation by the famed Greek artist George Zongolopoulos.

The Thessaloniki Waterfront is easily accessible from the center by bus or on foot. Once at the promenade, you can rent a four-wheel bike and explore the enchanting beauty of the city, or take a horse-drawn carriage for a romantic ride.
