Lefkada Festivals & Cultural Events

The traditional aspect of Lefkada is well-maintained throughout the centuries bringing inhabitants closer to the old customs.
All year round, the island organizes religious festivals celebrating the patron saints of the villages with food and drink.

Religious feasts & festivals

• August 15th
On August 15th is the celebration of the Monastery of Faneromeni in Frini, above Lefkada Town. This is a popular pilgrimage on Lefkada island.

• July 7th
On the 7th of July, the locals celebrate the feast of Agia Kyriaki in the villages of Nidri and Vlichos.

• December 12th
On the 12th of December, the celebration of Saint Spyridon takes place in Karia village.

Cultural events

• Traditional Wedding
In August, the residents of Karia organize a revival of a traditional wedding, during which the bride is decorated and then the wedding procession takes place.

• International Folklore Festival
The International Folklore Festival of Lefkada aims to reunite people with common traditions. It is held annually during the last week of August, including a parade and interesting events with famous dancing groups.

• Lentil Festival
The Lentil Festival takes place in the village of Eglouvi every year on August 6th. The celebration is held in the chapel of Agios Donatos, where guests can taste lentils accompanied by olives, fish and other delicacies.

• Literature and Art Festival
These celebrations are among the oldest Greek cultural institutions. From 1955 until today, the festival takes place in Lefkada Town and hosts renowned and well-respected artists; the one and only opera singer Maria Callas took part in the festival in 1964!
