Lefkada has a population of around 22.000 inhabitants who use the local buses for their transportation within and outside the island throughout the year.

In brief, KTEL buses are the only type of public transport on the island. It is also the most economical way of getting from one place to another. The main bus station is located in Lefkada Town and buses depart from there to reach the most touristy areas on the island and the major cities of the Greek mainland.
A rental car is recommended if you want to visit more than just the popular resorts.

Apart from the local routes, the buses also operate long-distance routes to Athens, Thessaloniki, Preveza, Patra and Igoumenitsa.
The routes to Preveza serve travelers arriving at Aktion Airport.

 

Bus tickets

The ticket cost is in accordance with the length of the route. Prices range from €1.60 (for a 14-kilometer distance or less) to €3.40.
You can purchase a ticket at the central bus station, which is located in Lefkada Town.
Each ticket does not correspond to a unique seat and passengers can select wherever they want to sit during the trip.

Condition

All buses have comfortable seats and the air-conditioning system is turned on during the routes to keep passengers cool.
Suitcases or other bulky items can be stored under the bus, but there is limited storage space above the seats for smaller items, like backpacks or jackets. There is no additional cost for using the storage space.

Getting to your destination

The bus station is located in Lefkada Town at Tzeveleki & Filosofon Str, a little outside the city center (around 15 minutes on foot from Lefkada's Wooden Bridge at the Town's entrance).
From the bus station, visitors can hop on a bus and reach the most touristy areas on the island, like Nidri, Vassiliki and Agios Nikitas.
