Kythira Avlemonas

General information

Avlemonas is a traditional fishing settlement located 19 km northeast of Chora, the capital of Kythira. Presenting an architecture reminiscent of the Cyclades, Avlemonas is one of the island's most beautiful villages known for the numerous minuscule stunning gulfs and lush vegetation that create an astounding natural backdrop.

The whitewashed houses with blue windows and the blooming gardens constitute one of the village's main attractions. The picturesque harbor, which serves as a shelter for fishing boats and caiques, is also considered a sight. 
Avlemonas Beach, situated right next to the small port, is ideal for swimming. The sea there is sparkling and clear with soft sand, while plenty of accommodation facilities are found nearby. Moreover, the largest beach in Kythira, Paleopoli Beach, is located within walking distance.

The most important historical site of Avlemonas is its Venetian Castle, a tiny 16th-century structure built at the entrance of the port. It was used as a watchtower during the Venetian period but today it is a known tourist attraction, idyllic for long moonlit walks, sparking the romanticism of a bygone era.
