Kythira Festivals & Cultural Events

The peaceful island of Kythira offers lively local fairs and festivals on special occasions. Locals try to revive the age-old traditions, offering visitors a chance to meet the folklore character of Kythira through the numerous celebrations.

Religious feasts & festivals

• August 1st
August 1st is the feast day of Agia Elessa, a saint that martyred on the island. A popular pilgrimage takes place at the monastery dedicated to her (Monastery of Agia Elessa).

• August 6th
August 6th is the day of the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ. A panigyri takes place at the small harbor of Avlemonas.

• August 15th
On the day of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary one will see pilgrims heading to churches dedicated to the Mother of Jesus throughout Kythira. Also, a traditional dance is organized every year in the central square of Potamos.

• September 15th
September 15th is the feast day of Agios Nikitas. People gather and celebrate in the courtyard of the former elementary school of Kalamos.

• September 24th
On September 24th is the celebration in the Monastery of Panagia Myrtidiotissa. According to the legend, this is the day when the miraculous icon was found.

• May 12th
May 12th is the feast day of Osios Theodoros, the patron saint of Kythira. Several pilgrims visit the small monastery of Osios Theodoros south of Potamos to attend the Divine Liturgy.

Cultural events

• Taxidi sta Kythira (Voyage to Cythera) Festival
The Municipality of Kythira organizes this festival every summer. It starts in May and comprises several events, both artistic and cultural; concerts, film screenings, theatrical plays, lectures and folklore exhibitions are among them.

• Wine Festival
The Wine Festival in Minata village takes place on the weekend before August 15th to honor the rich wine production of Kythira island. There is plenty of food and dancing.

• Agricultural Exhibition
The Agricultural Festival takes place in the village of Fratsia at the end of August. Preparations are made by local women dressed in traditional costumes and offering treats and local delicacies to the visitors, including olive oil, wine, and honey as well as products made by the local craftsmen.

• Portokalia Festival
A local association called Portokalia (Orange Tree) organizes an annual festival with a plethora of events on the last weekend of August. Renowned Greek musicians and singers have performed at this festival.
