Location: Poros

The oldest one in Kefalonia, the monastery of Panagia Atros, is located on a triangular hill, Atros Mountain, at an altitude of 760 meters above sea level. It is situated 5 km away from the town of Poros. It was built in the Byzantine era in the 8th century and holds both cultural and historical importance.

It is also known as Theotokos Monastery and is dedicated to the birth of the Virgin Mary. Its Medieval tower is still preserved, along with the archodariki, the guest rooms of the monastery. The earliest reference to it is by the Latin Archbishop of Kefalonia in his 1248 report. Moreover, the monks who used to live there would cultivate vineyards, and the old wine press is still visible. In later times, a newer building was also erected next to the Medieval ones.

The monastery celebrates the feast of the Virgin's birth on September 8th, which is inaugurated by an evening service on the previous day. As the monastery is not inhabited anymore, the faithful go there every year to prepare for celebrations.

It is a perfect destination for both adventure-seekers interested in going off the beaten track or couples looking for a romantic walk. The climb to the monastery offers some magnificent views of Poros and its harbor. Of special mention is the magnificent sunrise at this location.

    Lovely walk from Poros
    Lovely walk from Poros.
Well off the beaten track., Local taxis wouldn't go up the rough road, you'd need a 4 wheel drive.
Quite a long steep walk from Poros but definitely worth it.
