Lazareto Palace is an attractive establishment with a great location and stunning views of the beautiful bay of Vathi, tastefully decorated, with details and is the perfect place for a good stay in a lovely relaxing environment. It is located just opposite the island of Lazareto or Sotiras (with the church of the same name) located in Vathi near the SW beach of the port. It is dated 1560 where it was renovated.

The two-story building was built by the British in 1817, where the bust of then English Sir Thomas Maitland was built. It formerly housed a purgatory (1836), later a convict prison (until 1912), and is now unused. In previous centuries, there was a lazareto in every port where boats coming from overseas had to be stopped for medical examination. Many fighters were imprisoned there, such as G. Petalas Petas the Colonel of the 1821 fight, Odysseus Androutsos and other opponents of King Otto and George A.

On the island, there is also a nave of the Transfiguration 1668. Lazareto in Ithaca suffered significant damage to the earthquakes of 1953 and was soon demolished. We know that for the most part it was built of stones from ancient Greek ruins, in which entire inscriptions were read. This important material was not recorded.
