The Municipal Gallery of Corfu was originally established in 1978, but it was legally recognized as a public institution in 1991. After that, many donations were made by local families and artists, that today constitute the permanent exhibition of the gallery. Among the most important collections are the Samartzis Collection (42 works), the Aglaia Pappa Collection (23 works) and the Philippos Markotsis Collection (12 works), while two more works were donated by Nikolaos Ventouras.
