Chios Sights & Attractions

There are four traditional windmills in Chios, 1.5 km north of Chios Town on the road to Vrontados.

Its construction started in the 10th century by the Byzantines and went through some reconstructions by the Venetians in the 16th century. Today it is an impressive and strong building that reminds the historical importance of Chios.

The Castle was built during the Byzantine period but in the mid-15th century, it is believed it was restored by the Genoese.

Along with prehistoric and archaic treasures from the excavations of the British School at Emporios, this collection includes impressive Neolithic and Classical finds.

The museum is dedicated to "Mastiha" (or gum mastic), a unique product that has shaped the natural and human environment of the Mastichochoria area of southern Chios. The Mastiha cultivation was recognized by UNESCO, with its inscription to the list of intangible heritage.

Homerus Stone or Daskalopetra is a historical place in the area of Vrontados. According to tradition, this is actually the stone where Homer was seating on and was narrating his poems.

The Chios watchtowers are medieval cylindrical towers built on the island’s capes and shores for the purpose of monitoring the sea in order to timely notify the residents in the event of an enemy attack.

It is the largest and most impressive cave on Chios, with amazing formations.

Located in a beautiful mansion in Chios Town, this interesting museum illustrates the long nautical history of the island. The museum includes paintings and models of ships that belonged to local sea fearers, photographs, and many navigation tools.

The Korais Library of Chios is one of the largest in Greece with a significant collection exceeding 130,000 volumes. It was established in 1792, as a department of the Great Chian School. On the upper floor, you can visit the Philip Argenti Museum which exhibits a 19th-century birthing chair and also shepherds' tools, embroidery, traditional costumes, and portraits.

The Monastery of Nea Moni, between the villages of Karyes and Avgonyma, is one of the oldest monasteries in Greece. It was constructed in the 15th century and recently it was declared a World Heritage Monument by Unesco.

The Citrus museum presents documents and historical elements of local citrus fruits and production. It constitutes also of space for exhibitions.

This cave close to Olympi village is another miracle of nature. It was explored in 1985 and it is actually a cave gorge, 60m wide and with a humidity of 95%.

This tiny island with a rich natural history is a great daily excursions destination from Chios. It has traditional architecture, lovely beaches, and a calm environment. Daily boats to Oinousses depart from the port of Chios Town.

Psara is a small island with a rich historical past. Today this is the ideal place for total isolation and privacy. It has gorgeous beaches and a traditional village, with a few rooms to let.

The Monastery of Agia Markella is constructed on the site where the saint died for her faith. She is the protector of the island and the monastery celebrates on July 22nd.

The Monastery of Agios Markos is found near Karies, only 6 km from Chios Town. Its high location gives the best view of the surrounding landscape.

The Tower was built during the general fortification of the island by the Genoese at the start of the 15th century (1410-1415). This three-level building, constructed of light grey limestone is in a state of ruin with its four walls being preserved except for the southern wall.

Housed in the 19th-century Ottoman mosque in the central square of Chios Town, this museum was founded in 1980 and contains a collection of items and findings that have been discovered on the island and donated from private collections. Its exhibits date from the early Christian times till the 17th century.

This monastery is dedicated to the Holy Cross and to the three monks who founded the monastery of Nea Moni. It is located between Avgonyma and Karyes.

This folk art museum is located in the beautiful village of Pyrgi and it was founded by the cultural society "Adamantios Korais". It houses a rich collection of rural and agricultural tools, photographic and local press files and handicraft objects.
