Located on the east coast of Keros beach on the island of Lemnos, on an extraordinary 2 mile stretch of golden sand and sparkling waters, is the Keros Surf Club. The center is a surfer’s paradise for all ages and all levels of expertise, endowed as it is with two sections: a flat section on the north side that is perfect for a complete beginner or children, and another one, a wave section on the south side of the same bay, for bump and jump freaks and crazy freestylers.
Both sides are just 5 minutes apart and can be easily accessed by going upwind or downwind. The lazybones can reach it in 2 minutes by car. The shallow and secluded bay can be panned with a single look, and it is totally safe to learn beach-starts. The wind usually starts as a mild breeze early in the morning and peaks at midday, shifting side-offshore late afternoon, before tapering down a bit. Training at the center is strictly in accordance with the IKO (International Kite surfing Organization) guidelines, and most of the instructors are IKO Level 2 and come with a wealth of surfing experience as well as working knowledge of most European languages.
As for safety, the club takes the issue very seriously. Specially marked kite surfing zones, high-class equipment, as well as rescue personnel and equipment in a constant state of preparedness, have helped create a safe environment. The club also offers a host of extra activities to spice up your vacation. A cruise in a sea kayak, or the hugely popular early morning Gomati Surfari, an ultimate wave sailing experience with the strong Meltemi, at the Gomati beach, one of Greece’s best wave spots. To round off this unforgettable surfari is a visit to the magnificent sand dunes nearby, where one can get some spectacular shots, that is if they remember to take the camera along.
