Stones houses: Throughout the Byzantine period Ikaria was at the mercy of pirates and foreign invadors, just like many other islands of the Aegean.
In order to protect themselves, Ikarians used to construct their houses in a way that made them look like massive rocks from a certain distance. These houses were made with stones and plates (schists) and they had low ceiling without a chimney, so that no smoke could be seen from away and put people into danger.
