Chios Town

General information

Chios Town: It is the capital and main port of Chios located in the eastern coast of the island. With various schools, a university, and some cultural centres, Chios Town is the administrative, spiritual, cultural, business and educational centre of the island.

The town experienced extensive damages losing a great part of its beautiful architecture with the disastrous earthquake of 1881. Nevertheless, the modern town of Chios retains some interesting historic buildings witnessing its long history through the centuries.

Neoclassical buildings and mosques with Arabic influences still embellish this part of the town. Modern cafes, shops, houses and administrative buildings are harmoniously blended to the older architecture, creating a lively and attractive scenery.

The important sights of the town include the public garden, the ancient theatre, the statue of Kanaris, the bronze monuments of the Unknown soldiers, the ruins of the walls of ancient Chios and the old neighbourhood located within the walls of the Genovese castle.

Various shops, places for entertainment, accommodations and a good touristy infrastructure are available in Chios Town.

    Nice for afternoon walk
Chios has an interesting castle just a walking distance from the port. Not the most impressive castle in Greece, but it is a nice sightseeing for an afternoon in the town. It is open till sunset and was first constructed in the Byzantine times, but later it had many reconstructions and additions by the other occupants of the island. Not much survive of this castle today, except for the exterior walls, ruins of some houses, water cisterns and a cemetery. Next to the castle is the Old Town of Chios.
