The Maritime Museum of Chios, Eastern Aegean: An island with rich nautical tradition, the Maritime Museum of Chios depicts the long way of the locals as seafarers. The museum is located in Chios Town and it is housed in a two-storey Neoclassical mansion that was donated in 1991 by the shipowner Anastasios Pateras in order to host the museum. This mansion was constructed in the early 1920s and it has undergone some reformations in order to host the museum.
This maritime museum hosts portraits of sailboats and steamboats that belonged to shipowners from Chios works of the local artist Aristides Glykas (1870-1940), navigation tools, miniatures of vessels from various periods, photographs from life on board, manuscripts and many other exhibits that come from private collections. At the garden of the museum, there is a monument dedicated to the local seamen who lost their lives during World War II (1939-1945).
