The Archaeological Museum of Tilos, officially known as the Diachronic Archaeological Museum of Tilos, is a testament to the island’s rich historical tapestry, showcasing artifacts that span from prehistoric times to the post-Byzantine era. Situated in Megalo Chorio, the island’s capital, the museum is conveniently accessible to visitors exploring Tilos.

The museum’s collection is meticulously organized in chronological order, offering a comprehensive journey through Tilos’ past. Exhibits date back to as early as 4,000 B.C., providing insights into the island’s prehistoric era. One of the most remarkable displays includes fossils of dwarf elephants, shedding light on the unique fauna that once inhabited the region. These fossils were discovered in the Charkadio Cave, a significant paleontological site on the island.

In addition to prehistoric artifacts, the museum houses a diverse array of items from various historical periods. Visitors can admire classical vessels, small statues, ancient inscriptions, and sculptures from the Classical and Hellenistic periods. The collection also features wall paintings from Byzantine and post-Byzantine temples, offering a glimpse into the island’s religious and artistic heritage.

The museum’s establishment has been a significant cultural milestone for Tilos. Constructed on land donated by the Orthodox Church, the purpose-built facility was completed with an investment of 2.6 million euros. Its inauguration was celebrated by residents and officials, marking the realization of a long-held aspiration to preserve and showcase the island’s archaeological treasures.

Since its opening in July 2024, the Diachronic Archaeological Museum of Tilos has garnered attention from both tourists and scholars. Its comprehensive exhibits provide valuable educational opportunities, making it a popular destination for those interested in local history. The museum’s role in preserving and presenting Tilos’ cultural heritage has contributed to the island's appeal as a destination that offers more than just natural beauty.
