The Monastery of Agios Panteleimon (or Panteleimonas), dedicated to Saint Pantaleon – the patron saint of healing – is a significant spiritual and historical landmark on the Greek island of Tilos. Situated on the northwestern side of the island, the monastery is perched on a verdant slope of Kryallos Hill at an altitude of approximately 270 meters, surrounded by plains and chestnut trees.

Constructed between 1470 and 1480 by the monk Ionas, the monastery stands on the site of an ancient temple dedicated to Poseidon, remnants of which – such as Greek columns and capitals – are integrated into the current structure. The katholikon (main church) is a cruciform, domed edifice adorned with frescoes dating back to the late 15th century. Significant renovations occurred in 1703 under Abbot Lavrentios, including the addition of an ornate wood-carved iconostasis in 1714. Further artistic contributions include frescoes by Grigorios Simaios in 1776. Notably, in the late 19th century, the monastery functioned as a bank, issuing its own currency in denominations of 5, 10, 20, and 40 parades (currency used at the time).

Stone walls enclose the monastery complex, which features a rectangular tower, a stone-paved courtyard, and monastic cells. The courtyard is particularly notable for its intricate mosaic flooring, and the church houses decorative wall paintings from the 18th century. The serene environment is enhanced by the surrounding lush greenery and the presence of freshwater springs, which likely influenced the selection of the site.

Beyond its religious significance, the monastery offers visitors a tranquil retreat and a glimpse into the island’s rich history. The panoramic views from the monastery are stunning, with vistas overlooking the Aegean Sea and the island’s diverse terrain. The area is also a haven for wildlife enthusiasts; for instance, the cliffs near the monastery are among the best spots on Tilos to observe Eleonora’s falcons in their natural habitat.

Agios Panteleimon is revered as the protector of Tilos, and the monastery serves as the island’s most important pilgrimage site. Annually, from July 25th to 27th, a three-day festival celebrates the saint’s feast day. The festivities include traditional music, dances, and communal meals, attracting both locals and visitors who partake in the vibrant cultural heritage of the island.

The monastery is accessible via a scenic drive from Livadia, the island’s port, located approximately 15 kilometers away. Alternatively, it is about 6.5 kilometers from Megalo Chorio. Visitors can reach the site by car or bus

    Fabulous scenery
A beautiful monastery at the far end of the only asphalt road in Tilos. Saint Panteleimon is also the protector of the island and celebrates at the end of July, with lots of pilgrims coming there (as we were told, unfortunately our holiday dates didn't match with this festival cause I'm sure it would be a great celebration). The monastery has a large church, a paved yard and some cells for the monks. I think the monks can also host some visitors if required. The scenery around the monastery is fabulous and really relaxing. I could seat for hours and watch the wild mountains ahead.
