Rhodes Salakos

General information

Built in the foothills of Mount Prophet Elias, the second highest on the island, Salakos combines sea and mountain. It lies in a verdant valley, watered by abundant running streams that create an idyllic landscape. Being a biotope for the Jersey Tiger butterflies, which can also be found in much greater numbers in the Valley of Butterflies, the valley is a great place for refreshing hiking expeditions.

The settlement itself is a traditional village that retains its authenticity despite its gradual tourism development. Wandering through its cobblestone, narrow alleys, it is still possible to see the locals engaged in such traditional occupations as the fabrication of handmade carved chairs, grinding wheat, and baking in wood ovens. Overall, Salakas lends itself to relaxing family holidays, in which to sit back and relax, watching the children play blithely on Kamiros Beach, just 12 kilometers from the village.

If you find yourself in the area, take the time to visit the Monastery of Prophet Elias, as well as the Byzantine churches of Saint George and Saint Nicholas. In the wider area, you can also find the ruins of Ancient Kamiros, as well as traces of a medieval castle.
