Rhodes Mesanagros

General information

Mesanagros is located 79 km southwest of Rhodes Town, close to Lachania. It lies hidden between the mountains, at an altitude of 400 meters, and has a population of about 100 people. It is a privileged village with a history that goes back centuries.

Mesanagros means “in the middle of farms”. The village was first built in the mountains to avoid pirate raids. Today, Mesanagros is characterized by its narrow, picturesque streets and traditional homes that are exemplary of the region’s rural architecture, while many houses have been long abandoned. In the village's square one can find some local cafes to relax and enjoy coffee or another beverage.

The village houses a cluster of ruins along with many caves and countless findings that bear the art and way of life of the people. At the center of the village stands the 13th-century temple of the Annunciation of the Virgin (Koimisis Tis Theotokou). The temple was built atop an earlier Christian basilica from the 6th century.

Another religious moment that stands out is the 14th-century Byzantine Monastery of Saint Thomas, with an advantageous location that offers great views of the village and the sea beyond. The surrounding landscape comprises gorgeous waterfalls and lush forests with rich fauna and flora. About 5 km west of the village you will find the well-preserved Monastery of Panagia Skiadeni, which is still inhabited by monks today.
