Rhodes Kritinia

General information

Kritinia is one of the most beautiful villages in Rhodes. It is located 55km from Rhodes Town and built on the slopes of Mount Attavyros with a great panoramic view of the sea. It has a population of 500 people, most of whom are engaged in agriculture and farming. The name Kritinia is thought to be derived from the island of Crete, as many Cretan families fled from their homes and settled down in the area during the Turkish rule of Greece.

Over the years the village has become a popular tourist destination due to the Venetian Castle of Kritinia (known as Kastello to the locals). This castle was originally built by the Knights of Saint John and features elements of both Byzantine and Venetian architecture. It also boasts a stunning view of the Aegean. Another noteworthy point of interest in the village is the Church of Agios Ioannis, with its magnificent wall paintings that date back to the 16th century.

At the center of the village lie many traditional cafes (kafenia) and taverns which offer the best view to the visitors. The seafront settlement of Skala Kamirou is located a short distance from here, offering interesting sights to see as well as easy access to the nearby island of Halki.
