General information

Kremasti is located 12 km southwest of Rhodes Town. It is a popular tourist destination that has developed rapidly and combines tourism infrastructures with the simple living of the old village. The village’s name means “hanging” in Greek, thought to be derived from its hillside location overlooking the sea.

Kremasti features a handful of historically significant landmarks. It is worth seeing the remains of the Medieval Castle of Kremasti in the central part of the village and the impressive City Library Building, notable for its high Doric Columns. The Church of Virgin Mary Kremasti (Panagia Katholiki) is one of the largest churches on the island and houses the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary.

One of the things the village is most famous for is its Panigiri, or festival, of the Virgin Mary on the 15th of August. During the festivities, a huge market takes over the streets of the village, while lively celebrations with loud music and careless dancing take place till the early morning hours.

The area offers many options for accommodation, food, shopping, and entertainment. Visitors can enjoy the equal parts sandy and pebbly beach that begins from Kremasti and reaches the nearby village of Theologos. The windy conditions and constant waves make the beach ideal for water sports, with windsurfing and kitesurfing schools located on the coast. Access to Kremasti from Rhodes Town is very easy, with many taxis and public buses running frequently.

Sweet memory from a hot noon
The Neoclassical Library in the main square is probably the most scenic picture of Kremasti. A tiny village with stone houses, very typical of the other villages in Rhodes, it distinguishes only for the beautiful library. In the square, there is also a lovely cafe that offered us much comfort under the tree shade in a hot summer afternoon. Thanks a lot! we have sweet memories of this afternoon under the plane tree.
