Rhodes Kalithies

General information

The traditional village of Kalithies is located 13 km south of Rhodes Town and 2 km from the cosmopolitan resort of Faliraki. It is one of the biggest villages in Rhodes, with a population of about 5,000 inhabitants. The name Kalithies is thought to have originated from the plant “kolythos” or “kolytea”, which was found in abundance in the area. This probably refers to the flora species Colutea insularis.

The architecture of Kalithies is distinguished by the narrow paved streets and the stone houses, while its position offers a great view of the bay of Kallithea. There are some nice churches to visit near Kalithies, such as the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savor with a 16th-century iconostasis and a Church dedicated to Panagia Eleoussa with two Medieval coats of arms.

Close to Kalithies, there is also the Cave of Saint George with impressive stalactites and human traces from the Neolithic Era (5000 - 3700 BC) and the seaside Traganou Caves. If you go to Kalithies in September (13th-14th), you can witness the festival of the Holy Cross, one of the most impressive festivals in Rhodes.
