Embonas is the highest village in Rhodes, at an altitude of 850 meters. The elevated location of the village has kept it almost untouched by tourism and completely unspoiled; some of its inhabitants still wear traditional attires and upkeep customs that have been passed on through multiple generations.

The village’s pride is its many wineries and vineyards that have made it the island’s main wine producer. Those interested in diving deeper into the history and methods of wine production can do so through organized tours of these establishments, that conclude in wine-tasting sessions. Embonas’ culinary contributions also include high-quality olive oil and honey, along with souma, a popular strong spirit.

In the village square, you will find a church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Within 3 km of Embonas lies a beautiful cypress forest with a hiking trail, which has been included in the NATURA 2000 network and is the perfect destination for nature lovers.

Almost all the houses in the village are fine examples of Rhodian architecture and are well-maintained. Boutique shops offer a wide range of unique souvenirs and local products, from tablecloths and rugs to ceramics and jewelry. A few rooms for rent can be found in the area, as well as various cafes and taverns serving some mouth-watering specialties.

Depending on when you visit Embonas, you may be able to partake in one of its annual celebrations. The cauliflower festival takes place in June, while the wine festival is held in August. In these events, you can indulge in delicious dishes and drinks while enjoying performances of folk ensembles playing traditional music.
