Rhodes Eleousa

General information

Located 34 km southwest of Rhodes Town, Eleousa is a tiny village in the middle of a lush green forest, at the foot of the mountain of Profitis Ilias. Not as old as many other villages on the island, Eleousa was established in 1935 for lumberjacks and sawyers who emigrated from North Italy. It was one of the four rural villages built during the Italian dictatorship of the island and was originally named Campochiaro.

Eleousa’s origins are still evident today, through the presence of various old Italian buildings. In the village square, you will find an Italian market, featuring arches and small curved balconies. On one end of the square lies a dilapidated sanatorium while on the other the Church of Agios Charalambos stands tall. An Italian aqueduct is perched upon the hill overlooking the village.

More about Eleousa

Another highlight is the artificial circular lake and fountain, situated about 200 meters from the village. Filled with the waters of the nearby Koskinisti spring, it is the home of various species of fish, including the endangered Gizani fish. Many plane trees surround the lake, affording the waters a stunning emerald green hue.

The fresh country air and the running water make Eleousa a nice place for hiking or mountain biking. For a more relaxing time, you can visit the many taverns in the region that serve a medley of authentic Greek dishes and drinks. Plenty of accommodation options are available in the form of traditional hotels and guesthouses.
