Location: Laerma

Thari Monastery lies in the middle of a forest near the village of Laerma, about 57 km from Rhodes Town. This stunning religious landmark is one of the most visited monasteries on the island and today serves as a sanctuary for monks. The meaning and significance of the word Thari varies depending on who you ask, with the most prominent belief being that it originates from the ancient Greek word for bravery (tharros).

The monastery is dedicated to the Archangel Michael. According to legend, during the 7th century, a deadly ill princess traveled from Constantinople to Rhodes to live out the rest of her days. One night, the Archangel came to her dreams and promised her that she would recover, which she miraculously did. In gratitude, the young woman decided to establish the Monastery of Thari in his honor. Scholars disagree on when exactly the monastery was constructed, placing it between the 9th and 13th centuries. What is known, however, is that it was built on the foundations of a much older church dating back to the 5th century and that it underwent major reconstructions around the 12th century.

Today the monastery is a magnificent sight to behold. Surrounded by pine trees and lush nature, it was built so as to not be detectable by invading pirates and other intruders. The 12th-century north and south walls remain, as do buildings from the 14th to 16th century. The interiors of the buildings and the domed church as renowned for the remarkable frescoes lining their walls. Noteworthy is the mural on the dome, depicting Jesus Christ surrounded by 16 prophets, as are the depictions of the Last Supper, the Samaritan woman and the Ascension. Among its many artifacts, the most treasured of the monastery is the metal figurine of the miraculously healed princess who founded it. Near the sacred grounds, you will also find a shop with souvenirs and products made by the monks, including wine and mountain tea.

Those wanting to visit the monastery should be aware that the area is not serviced by public buses. Thus the use of a personal vehicle is recommended. From the village of Laerma, it can be reached by a path approximately 4 km southwest, with some signs to guide you along the way.
