Throughout its history, the Acropolis served as both a military stronghold and a religious center. During the reign of the Knights of Saint John, around the 14th and 15th centuries, it was majorly renovated, being fortified to protect against pirate attacks.
Today the Acropolis of Saint Phokas lies in the heart of a forest and is mostly in ruins. Visitors can gaze upon the stone foundations of this once-great cultural hub, as well as some underground areas and other stone structures. You can reach the location of the Acropolis by following the sign-posted path from the nearby Kymisala Necropolis.
