Location: Kremasti

The Church of Panagia Katholiki in Kremasti lies in the heart of the village, a short walk from the city library building. Built on the ruins of an older church, it is one of the largest and most historically important churches on the island. It welcomes countless visitors every year, looking to experience firsthand its enchanting atmosphere and marvel at its unique architecture and religious artifacts.

The sanctuary is designed in a cruciform layout with three aisles, a dome and a spacious western gallery that contains a women’s section. Its exterior boasts a Byzantine design but with some modern touches, characterized by a striking white color. On the northwest side of the church lies a porch that features an impressive bell tower. To the west, you will see a tribute to Metropolitan Spiros Sinodinos, who played a major role in renovating the church.

Stepping inside the church, you will be instantly overtaken by a sense of awe. Every inch of its interior is covered with vibrant frescoes, depicting religious figures, saints and biblically significant scenes. A large collection of religious relics is housed in the church, including miniature icons, various manuscripts and a 1745 Venetian Gospel book. The most important artifact is, however, the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary. Dating back to the 14th century, it is said to possess healing abilities and is now enshrined on the southeast side of the church.
