The medieval castle of Kremasti stands on a 28-meter-high hill, in the center if the homonymous village. It was constructed by the Knights of Saint John —probably in the 14th century— and underwent extensive repairs around 1510-1520, under the rule of the Grand Master Fabrizio del Carretto.

Along with the Castle of Filerimos, this fort allowed the Knights to control the surrounding area, while historical records indicate that it also served as a place of refuge for the villagers in case of Turkish raids. At the same time, the fact that the structure looks more like a castle-house than a defensive fort has led historians to suppose that it must have been used as a summer residence by the Grand Masters of the Knights of Saint John.
It is rectangular in shape and covers an overall surface of 400 square meters. All that survives today is the outer walls, which have a perimeter of 80 meters, and two domed chambers near the gate, on the northern side of the enceinte. Visitors can also see the remnants of the monastery of Agios Nikolaos, which was built at a later date.
