Location: Massari

The Monastery of Kamiri lies 4km northwest of the Village of Massari, on Kamirioti Hill. It was built in the 12th century in commemoration of the miracle of Archangel Michael at Chonai in Asia Minor. As the story goes, one day a group of pagans diverted the flow of a river to destroy a shrine dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The monk guarding the shrine prayed for its protection and, miraculously, the Archangel appeared and plunged his spear into the river, diverting its course and saving the shrine.

The monastery includes the temple of Taxiarchis (Archangel Michael), a bell tower to the right of the temple, guest houses, cells, a large dining room and an oven. All the buildings feature an all-white exterior, while inside you will find a collection of intricate frescoes and mosaic floors. The church is cruciform with a dome and contains a remarkable painting of the Archangel Michael. Having a remote location, the monastery is also fairly quiet and is surrounded by lush greenery and tall hills.
