The construction of the Gadoura Dam in Rhodes began in 2002, with the intent to supply potable water for the island up to the year 2039 when the annual water demand is estimated to reach 26.5 million cubic meters. The project was concluded in 2014 and operation of the dam began shortly thereafter.

At a height of 60m, the dam is surrounded by beautiful greenery and provides stunning views of the resultant lake. It has become a popular choice among those looking for an out-of-the-box hiking destination, providing landscapes and sceneries unlike any other on the island. Most of the roads up to the dam are normally paved and accessible by both foot or car, however, there are also some unmarked dirt tracks leading the way. As you reach the dam, you are sure to be overwhelmed by its sheer size, a true marvel of engineering and construction. Reaching the top of the hill, the reservoir comes into view, the deep blue waters of the lake stretching through the green hills, offering a truly one-of-a-kind view.
It should be noted that the hike up to the dam is fairly extensive, clocking in at about 20 km, depending on which trail you take. There are also no stops for refreshments or food along the way, so those wanting to visit the dam should come well prepared, with plenty of food, water, and any other supplies they may need. Hiking during peak summer months is also not advised, as the heat can be unrelenting.
